Mayor Karl Dean has accepted the recommendation of a convention of physicians to appoint Dr. Amy McMaster, currently the acting Davidson County medical examiner, to serve in the position permanently.
If confirmed, McMaster
will serve a five-year term and, after which, will be eligible for reappointment.
would replace Dr. Bruce Levy, who resigned after being arrested in Mississippi on drug charges earlier this year.
"Dr. McMaster is well qualified for the position and has done an excellent job of leading the Medical Examiner's Office on an interim basis," Dean said in a release.
McMaster received her doctor of medicine degree at Meharry Medical College in 1996, completed her residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and completed a fellowship in forensic pathology at the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner's Office.
She has worked in the Davidson County Medical Examiner's Office since 2002, serving as deputy chief medical examiner for the past six years.
A Nashville native, McMaster
is an employee of Forensic Medical Management Services
(FMMS), which currently has the contract for management of the Davidson County Medical Examiner's Office.
She has served as chief operations officer for FMMS since 2007 and as chief medical officer since August of this year.
