Tempe, AZ - Former Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan "Bud" Selig has signed on as a professor with Arizona State University's (ASU) Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law.
In addition to teaching, Selig will serve as the founding president of the Sports Law and Business Advisory Board. Selig says he's looking forward to getting into the classroom, "I'll tell you what I'm going to tell students when I start teaching at ASU - I'll say, 'You have the best education at ASU and now you're going into a great field. Do what you want to do. There is no substitute for hard work, and dream big." Selig points out that he deep has connections with Arizona where he's had a second home for many years, and that one of his daughters attended ASU. Selig retired from Major League Baseball last year following more than two decades in the commissioner's chair. His main home is in Wisconsin where he once owned the Milwaukee Brewers. Selig adds that professors and students are on the ground floor in the relatively new area of Sports Law and Business, "It's a field that didn't exist when I first got into the business. I don't think any of us understand how big this is going to be, and I really believe ASU is going to be a pioneer in this field." Selig is credited with bringing about major changes to Major League Baseball such as a strong drug-testing policy, instant replay, and a labor agreement with the Players Association that has endured for more than 20 years.
