Allen Coggins - "An armchair tour of the Smokies: From Sugarlands to Clingmans Dome" Allen Coggins is a freelance writer and part-time subcontractor with Oak Ridge Associated Universities. His presentation today is based upon his nearly decade long experience as a Smoky Mountain tour bus guide. He is author of the book, Place Names of the Smokies, which was published by the Great Smoky Mountains Association in 1999. He has worked as an Emergency Management Specialist at Oak Ridge Associated Universities and he has been with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Allen wrote a book "Tennessee Tragedies: Natural, Technological, and Societal Disasters in the Volunteer State. based on what he has learned during his career and he spoke to the Technical Society about disasters in January of 2012. His career has taken him to many places and has learned much about Tennessee as a naturalist with an eye for interesting things.
Allen served as president of the Technical Society of Knoxville in 2005.

Mr. Coggins is a freelance writer and part-time subcontractor with Oak Ridge Associated Universities, where he previously worked for twenty years. He has also served as Chief Naturalist for both Georgia and Tennessee State Parks. He is a native of Knoxville and Oak Ridge. He and his wife, Barbara, now reside in Blount County, in the shadow of their beloved Smoky Mountains.
