Dr. Lieberman has practiced medicine for 51 years, specializing for the last 33 years in Environmental Medicine and Toxicology (for both adults and children), and formerly in Pediatrics. As a research scientist, he developed Molecular Signal Therapy to help treat autism and other neurological disorders, and has published numerous research articles. In 2002, he was awarded the prestigious Herbert J. Rinkel Award for Academic Excellence and Achievement in Environmental Medicine.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree at Chicago Medical School in 1960 and continued training at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, IL, in the practice of General Medicine, and at Children's Memorial Hospital in Pediatrics and Pediatric Pathology.
As a former pediatrician, he co-authored multiple papers in clinical pediatrics and worked in hepatitis virus research, as well as participating in early clinical experience with the new measles virus vaccine. He became Medical Director for the MUSC Vince Moseley Diagnostic and Evaluation Clinic for the Neurologically Handicapped and for the SC Coastal Center for medically retarded and neurologically handicapped children. He was also a private practice pediatrician.
Dr. Lieberman was one of the first physicians to recognize environmental triggers as causes of alterations in health, thinking, and behavior, and earned Fellowship in the American Academy of Environmental Medicine. Environmental Medicine embraces a comprehensive approach to medicine and addresses problems related to allergy, immunology, nutrition, and toxicology.
In 1978, he built The Center for Environmental Medicine, the first facility in the Southeast designed to be an environmentally safe haven for the chemically sensitive patient. (The name was later changed to the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine.) His intensive Program for Biodetoxification, developed to treat those who have been chronically or acutely poisoned by chemicals, draws patients from all over the nation.
He continues to teach not only his own patients (and their parents), but also lectures at the American Academy of Environmental Medicine annual meetings and at the International Conference of Man and His Environment, held annually in Dallas, TX. His Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine has treated over 10,000 patients in the last 33 years.
