Alicia Aiken is the Director of Training at LAF (Legal Assistance Foundation), the largest legal services program in Cook County, Illinois.
undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Michigan (1992; 1995), and has practiced in Illinois, Vermont, and Michigan.
legal services career, Ms. Aiken
has represented victims of domestic violence and people living in poverty in complex legal matters related to divorce, custody, protection from abuse, subsidized housing, unemployment compensation, and consumer defense matters.
also teaches widely, including as an adjunct professor at DePaul College of Law
, an instructor for the Chicago Metropolitan Battered Women's Network
, and as the lead trainer at LAF.
In addition to her work at LAF, Ms. Aiken is the Executive Director of Confidentiality Institute, a national organization which provides training, toolkits and technical assistance to protect the private and confidential information that victims of sexual and domestic violence share with their advocates.
In 2003, Ms. Aiken
was awarded LAF's Equal Justice Award for excellence in appellate advocacy.
In 2006, she received the first Chicago Foundation for Women "Founder's Award", a $25,000 award given annually to one exceptional young advocate for women.
In 2009, Ms. Aiken
was named as one of 40 Attorneys Under 40 to Watch in Illinois.
