Alfred C. Weaver Alfred C. Weaver is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Virginia, where he directs the department's Computer Networks Laboratory, the University's Internet Commerce Group, and founded the state's Internet Technology Innovation Center. As part of the team that developed the Xpress Transport Protocol, Weaver is interested in network protocols, telemedicine, and e-commerce. His current research centers on secure, available, reliable e-business systems. Alf Weaver received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois in 1976. He joined the University of Virginia in 1977 and is now Director of the department's Computer Networks Laboratory, Director of the university's Internet Commerce Group, and founding Director of the state's Internet Technology Innovation Center. He was an ACM National Lecturer, gave keynote addresses at several leading conferences, held the Lucian Carr III endowed chair, and is a Fellow of the IEEE. He has supervised over 120 research projects, advised over 65 graduate students, and co-authored four books, six book chapters, over 140 refereed papers, and a patent.
Weaver and colleagues developed the Xpress Transport Protocol (supporting multicast and knowledge of the multicast group members) for the U.S. Navy, and then turned XTP into a commercial product. He was a founder of the Virginia's Internet Technology Innovation Center, which provided technical and business strategy for e-business, and developed e-commerce software for corporate and government clients. His current research focuses on medical data privacy and security, implemented by using web services to support authentication, authorization, and federation across trust domains. He is also developing delta compression algorithms for diverse environments

WILMINGTON, NC – E-commerce expert Alfred C. Weaver, professor of computer science at the University of Virginia, will present "Distributed Computing at the Internet's Edge" at 3 p.m., Friday, April 12, in UNCW's Cameron Hall, Room 133.
Weaver, who is also director of Internet Commerce Group at UVA, designs advanced e-commerce software systems.He is founder of Virginia's Internet Technology Innovation Center, which provides technical and business strategy for e-business and develops e-commerce software for corporate and government clients.Weaver and his research team created the Xpress Transport Protocol for the U.S. Navy and a digital ultrasound system for the Department of Radiology at UVA.
