Alfred C. Graves
and Donald V. Dube were removed in the early 1990s from partial or all ministry as a result of sexual misconduct.
Phone messages seeking comment from Kennedy, Graves
and Dube went unanswered.
...Graves in 1992 resigned abruptly from Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. He
too was reported to be on a leave of absence from 1993-94 and then disappeared from the directory altogether.
A call was placed to him at a Rutland, Vt., address.
Lavigne's status as a priest and his
financial support by the diocese have recently been the object of protest in the diocese.
The Rev. James J. Scahill, pastor of St. Michael's Parish
in East Longmeadow, announced at Masses at his
church last week that it is withholding contributions for the diocese until Lavigne is laicized.
The announcement was met with applause by parishioners.
Dupre said mandatory laicization was taken off the table yesterday at least partially out of concern that the policy may not meet approval from the Vatican, which has publicly expressed concerns about cutting ties to all abusing priests.
Before the policy is formally enforced, it has to be approved by the Vatican.
Dupre doesn't anticipate the Vatican making any major changes.
