Lavigne's status as a priest and his financial support by the diocese have recently been the object of protest in the diocese.
The Rev. James J. Scahill, pastor of St. Michael's Parish in East Longmeadow, announced at Masses at his church last week that it is withholding contributions for the diocese until Lavigne is laicized.
The announcement was met with applause by parishioners.
Dupre said mandatory laicization was taken off the table yesterday at least partially out of concern that the policy may not meet approval from the Vatican, which has publicly expressed concerns about cutting ties to all abusing priests.
Before the policy is formally enforced, it has to be approved by the Vatican.
Dupre doesn't anticipate the Vatican making any major changes.
