They include 31 scholars and grantees of the CASA San Miguel Foundation, and 120 musically inclined children from the local community of San Antonio who are training under violinist Alfonso "Coke" Bolipata. Mr. Bolipata, president and musical director of CASA San Miguel, established the foundation after returning from his studies at the Julliard School of Music in New York and the University of Indiana.He
started offering workshops in 1996 to prove to his
local community of fisher-folk and farmers that the arts are not just for the rich and the elite.
"This is an example of Filipino excellence, a convergence of artistic excellence and the community.We have the most exciting young musicians.There are children as young as six to seven years old performing like adults," Mr. Bolipata
said in an interview.
