died of cancer on Tuesday at her
home in Commack.She
was 53.Born in Glen Cove on Oct. 28 , 1947 , Gross was raised in Commack and attended Commack High School
.She studied education at SUNY Oswego , where she earned bachelor's and master's degrees
decided to return to Long Island , her
mother , Doris , suggested that she
talk with Gross
.Within days of their meeting , Gross
to dinner , and the two wed in 1982.Gross
worked as a school psychologist and coordinator for handicapped students at Western Suffolk BOCES for nearly 20 years , where she
befriended Helen Boggs Smith , deputy superintendent of the education program.
Friends , family and colleagues remembered Gross
as warm and giving , with an appreciation for decorum.
When we were teenagers she
would visit us up in Gilman Lake , said her
cousin Tom Stewart of Brooklyn Heights , referring to a vacation spot in upstate New York.It was a rustic place with bugs and dirt , but her
hair was always done perfectly..Gross was a member of the New York State Psychologists Association , the Long Island Psychologists Association , the National Association for School Psychologists and the Association for School Curriculum and Development
was also very involved with Suffolk County Bar Association
and New York State Bar Association activities with her
husband , a labor attorney.Gross
was an avid boater and often fly-fished in the Nissequogue River.
husband , Gross is survived by her
mother , Doris Matthews of Commack ; two sisters , Joy Peirson of Stamford , Conn. , and Faith Englund of Shirley ; three sons , Gregory Garno of Miami , Alexander Gross
of Holbrook and Daniel Gross of Boston ; two daughters , Jessica Garno of Harrison , N.Y. , and Deborah Zeman of Northport ; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church
, 130 Main St. , Northport.
Burial will follow at Northport Rural Cemetery on Sandy Hollow Road.
