Albrecht Schmidt Albrecht Schmidt, editor of the Invisible Computing column, is the head of the Human-Computer Interaction Group in the Institute for Visualization and Interactive Systems at the University of Stuttgart. Schmidt, widely known for his work on context-awareness and the use of context as a resource in human-computer interaction, also has created new technologies for mobile interaction and in the automotive domain. Schmidt received an MSc in computing from Manchester Metropolitan University and an MSc in computer science from the University of Ulm. He worked as a researcher at the University of Karlsruhe and at Lancaster University, where he completed his PhD on the topic of "ubiquitous computing-computing in context."

Albrecht Schmidt - Ubiquitous computing
Albrecht Schmidt
Albrecht Schmidt joined Lancaster University (UK) in 2001 and helped to establish the newly founded Ubiquitous Computing Group. In November 2002 he submitted his PhD thesis with the title Ubiquitous Computing - Computing in Context. Albrecht is working in the area of situated interaction and context-awareness. In particular he is interested in the use of sensors to gain context, models and mechanisms to exploit context, and the resulting implications for human computer interaction. He contributed various papers on issues in Ubiquitous Computing and is actively involved in organizing scientific events in the field. Albrecht is program co-chair of Ubicomp 2003. Currently Albrecht is working in the Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration EQUATOR on questions that focus on the integration of physical and digital interaction. He is involved in the project 'Smart-Its' that envisions small-scale smart devices that can be attached to mundane everyday artefacts to augment these with a 'digital self'.

Title: Interacting with the Ubiquitous Computer
Albrecht Schmidt , Keynote at Mobile HCI 2003, 10th Sept 2003
Albrecht Schmidt is a researcher with the media informatics group at the University of Munich ( Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany). His major research interest is in novel user interfaces and new forms of interaction enabled by Ubiquitous Computing. Albrecht previously worked as a research associate at Lancaster University in the UK. In projects under the European Disappearing Computer Initiative and within the EQUATOR Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration in the UK he explored new interactive systems. His particular interest was on the question how to prototype physical user interfaces at the crossroads of computer science, ethnography, and design. Formerly Albrecht was a research assistant at the University of Karlsruhe, where he worked on context-aware and sensor-based user interfaces for mobile devices. He received his PhD in computer science from Lancaster University and studied Computing at the Manchester Metropolitan University (UK) and at the University of Ulm (Germany).
