Alan Wilkie was born in Denton Burn, a suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1951.He now lives in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, with his wife Margaret and sons Ben and Carl.During his refereeing career he worked as an electrical engineer for British Telecom, combining a busy job with a demanding role as a soccer referee, travelling all over the country, and sometimes Europe, for mid-week matches as well as the usual weekend appointments.Having retired as a top flight referee in 2000, when he reached the mandatory retirement age, he is now a full time official of the Football Association in his capacity as Regional Manager-Referees.He is also a match delegate for the Premier League and the Football League, reporting on everything from crowd behaviour and safety, to the performance of referees and their assistants. His hobbies include driving, music (from Westlife to Classical) and a passion for crosswords. His first love, though, is football where despite establishing a reputation as one of the most colourful referees of recent times he would simply regard himself as a football (and especially a Newcastle United) enthusiast.
