Alan Van Etten
has more than 20 years of experience representing and advising individual and commercial policyholders on insurance coverage and litigation in bad faith litigation.
For more than 10 years prior to that, and during that period to an ever-decreasing extent, Alan
has also represented individuals and business entities in general and commercial tort law, which experience has been very useful in advising and representing his
regularly represents individual and commercial policyholders, has also represented the State of Hawaii, and has recovered many millions of dollars for his
clients, both in insurance coverage and in bad faith, in settlements, arbitrations and trials.
As Hawaii has a population of only 1,200,000 or so on all 8 islands, there is a relatively small client base, so although Alan's practice is currently 98% insurance coverage and bad faith law and litigation, he
represents policyholders with all kinds of policies, except for specialty insurance policies for areas such as ERISA.
represents and has represented for decades policyholders with primary policies in property and casualty, accidental life, disability, directors and officers, professional liability, managed health care, homeowners, and general liability insurance, and has represented policyholders with excess insurance policies of various types.
Alan's practice has involved representing policyholders in federal, state and bankruptcy courts throughout the State of Hawaii.
Alan is the first attorney licensed in the State of Hawaii to have been invited to join ACCEC.
Alan has also been a member of the Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee (ICLC) of the Tort & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) of the ABA since 1994.
He was an ICLC/TIPS Vice-Chair between 2001 and 2010, and was the Program Chair for the ICLC Annual Meeting in February, 2009.
He was the Co-Founder of the Hawaii State Bar Association's Insurance Coverage Litigation Section in 2006, was its first Chairperson and has been a member and Chair Emeritus ever since.
Alan was Adjunct Professor at the only law school in the State of Hawaii, the William S. Richardson School of Law, in the Spring Semester of 1993 and the Fall Semester of 1994, when he taught Advanced Torts/Insurance Law.

He was the Hawaii State Representative to the American Bar Association House of Delegates for nine years, where he was a member of that body's Nominating Committee.
He recently completed a 3-year term serving as one of the 15 members, nationally, of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, which evaluates and rates proposed federal court nominees for the White House.
Most recently, Alan
has accepted a three-year appointment from 2014-2017 as a Lawyer Delegate to the United States District Court of Hawaii Judicial Conference
