PROFILE: ALAN KOCH

Alan Koch is the owner of Focus Resources, a business he started more than 25 years ago. The business sprang from his passion for education and his earnest commitment to helping colleges and organizations do their best work in marketing and public relations.
Alan's passion for education comes, in part, from his time teaching -- three years teaching high school and 11 years teaching at the college level. In 1984, he moved from teaching into administrative work at Chemeketa Community College and served as Director of College Advancement for 19 years. Alan was in charge of college marketing, public relations, grant writing and student community service programs. He also managed the college's award-winning website.
As Director of College Advancement, Alan began sharpening his skills using the focus group process. Integrating the focus group process into planning at Chemeketa proved important in improving services and in guiding the development of its marketing and communications strategies. During that time, other colleges, organizations and businesses took notice and began to call on Alan to help with their marketing research and to help plan their communications strategies. Professional organizations also called on him to present around the United States on these assessment and marketing strategies.
In 2000, National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) invited him to lead workshops and consult with colleges and universities around the United States in website writing, design, marketing, assessment and management. Alan also worked, at that time, with the World Affairs Council to provide training in web marketing and design for managers of emerging Russian businesses.
Alan has watched and studied the emerging boomer market in the United States and in 2003 he helped Chemeketa Community College design and launch the Lifelong Learning Institute. The institute grew as a unique program offering retreat-style workshops and educational experiences for people over the age of 50. Alan served as coordinator of the institute until 2011, when he retired from the college.
NCMPR honored Alan in 2007 with the D. Richard Petrizzo Career Service Award for distinguished contributions to the marketing and public relations profession. In addition to this award, Alan has received more than 35 other regional and national awards for video and radio production, print materials, marketing campaigns and web design. He is the author of several articles on website design and management, qualitative research and, most recently, on marketing to the emerging boomer market.
Though he grew up in Iowa, Alan attended college in California. He has an A.A. degree from Diablo Valley College (Pleasant Hill, California), and B.A. and M.S. degrees in communication from San Jose State University.
Alan lives in Portland, Oregon.

Alan Koch may have "retired" from Chemeketa Community College a few years ago - after 19 prosperous years there - but he's not taking it easy.In fact, he's busier than ever, dividing his time between his own consulting company, Focus Resources, and the Lifelong Learning Institute at, well, Chemeketa.
Through Focus Resources, Koch offers qualitative research training and Web design for organizations, businesses and colleges. (In this capacity, he's also part of NCMPR's Speaker's Bureau.) For Chemeketa's Lifelong Learning Institute, which caters to adult learners over 50, he develops new educational programs and learning experiences.
Throughout his illustrious career - past, present and future - Koch has retained strong ties to the world of marketing, PR and communications.
At the time he retired from Chemeketa, Koch was director of college advancement, responsible for college marketing, public relations, publications, grant writing, community service programs, and Web site administration.Before that, he held several different titles and served the college in many other capacities, overseeing student services, supervising instruction in graphic arts and journalism, directing Chemeketa's Humanities and Communications Department, and teaching mass communications, advertising, public relations, news writing and editing, and English composition.
Before joining the staff at Chemeketa, Koch was a high school journalism and English teacher in Santa Monica, Calif.And before that, he wrote for the promotions department and sold advertising for Suburban Newspapers in Cupertino, Calif.
Today, Koch retains his membership in NCMPR and is also a member of the International Association of Business Communicators, Portland Advertising Federation, National Council of Instructional Administrators, and the World Affairs Council.
People who know Koch applaud his professional achievements.But they also express deep admiration for his soft-spoken style, his gentle manner, and his commitment to community.
While at Chemeketa, for example, Koch initiated the college's annual community service day, "Into the Streets," and coordinated it from 1995 to 2003.After 9/11, he wanted to create a memorial on campus and began a drive to establish a Peace Garden, seeking private contributions from staff and students.
