Held Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, the summit featured remarks from local education leaders as well as Alan Hooker, a former football standout who has moved on to a career in education.
The choice of Hooker as keynote speaker meant the summit had a football theme. Hooker earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and a master's degree in education from North Carolina A&T State University, where he was quarterback and captain of the football team, breaking 15 school passing records. After college, he signed a free-agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys. He is an education consultant and executive director of Veritas Sports Academy in Greensboro.
Football aside, Hooker said, his career in education has included "probably some of the most important things that I could ever do."
Like successful athletes, Hooker suggested, students "want to be part of something that's greater than what they are," and educators and others can make that happen.
"It's going to take the entire community," he said.
Hooker said excellence in any field results from persistence, purpose, passion and preparation.
"Passionate people move other people," he said in elaborating on one of those qualities.
