Hon. Alan O. Forst
Fourth District Court of Appeal West Palm Beach, Florida

www.palmbeachpost.com

Editorial: Governor should not put Alan Forst on the 4th District Court of Appeal.
On the third page of his 108-page application, Alan Orantes Forst lists his "Conservative Credentials. Among them are political work for Republicans, a charter membership in the "Conservative Network" and his work for the Federalist Society, a right-wing legal group. He recalls Clarence Thomas "complimenting" him when Mr. Forst worked for the future Supreme Court justice at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Gov. Scott has stated his preference for conservative judges. What matters most, though, is professional qualifications. Based on that standard, for the governor to pick Mr. Forst would be a joke. Mr. Forst could not. He spent just three years practicing law in Florida after a government career that includes many "special assistant" job titles. Since 2001, he has been chairman of the panel in Florida that hears gripes about unemployment benefit claims. There are no oral arguments. The work is "quasi-judicial. On the website of the Florida Reemployment Assistance Appeals Commission, though, Mr. Forst has posted a picture of himself with…Clarence Thomas. But Mr. Forst somehow got through the screening by the 4th DCA nominating commission to become a finalist, and Gov. Scott put him on the nominating commission that screens judicial applicants in Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee counties. Mr. Forst's politics should get him no farther.
