Alan J. Coulson
received the B.E. (Hons.)degree from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, in 1985 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 1999.
He is a Senior Member of IEEE.
From 1985 to 1988, he was a Systems Engineer specializing in radar display systems at NZ Civil Aviation, later Airways Corporation.
He was a Software and Hardware Engineer with Solid State Logic (U.K.) from 1988 to 1990, designing professional digital audio systems.
In 1991, he joined NZ DSIR, which became Industrial Research Ltd (IRL) in 1992, as a Research Engineer in the Communications Team.
He has been Programme Manager for Information and Communications Technologies research at IRL since 2002.
research interests are communications theory, signal processing, sampling theory, statistical analysis, and network protocols, all directed toward application in communication systems.
current research projects involve the development of broadband wireless systems, for multimedia applications, operating in license-free spectrum, with a focus on cognitive radio technologies.
