Arkansas County Sheriff Allen Cheek on diesel theft: Doing the best we can Stuttgart Daily Leader - Stuttgart, AR
Justice Kirk Keller asked Arkansas County Sheriff Cheek about recent thefts of diesel on area farms. Cheek explained that deputies were patrolling and they are "doing the best we can. In this day of technology many times thieves are warned by others about officers when they are in the area, he said. Cheek suggested farmers and land owners utilize game cameras to watch their property and be alert to suspicious activities and report them to his offices. Cheek recommends that farmers keep their eyes on their fuel tanks and other property and keep other items under lock and key. As hunting season approaches, there are increases in burglaries of hunting clubs both prior to the season starting and then again at the close of season. Burglar alarms are a good deterrent also. According to Cheek, "Many of the crimes are committed by criminals who have gotten out of jail, can't get a job because they can't pass drug tests, or because of their criminal records, so they resort to crime again. The prisons are overcrowded so they keep releasing prisoners back into communities." Cheek went on to say that he felt cameras at intersections would help in identifying vehicles which may be involved in criminal actions and spoke of a case last year where this happened.
Arkansas County Judge Eddie Best and Cheek went on to discuss several ways to address the crime problem in the county.
Cheek then gave his update on the juvenile and adult detention centers. Currently, there are 84 inmates in the adult facility, 60 males and 24 females, of which ten females are 309 prisoners. There are four males in the juvenile facility. The work crew is still working at the water treatment plant in Stuttgart. Cheek told the court, "the new healthcare program is working well, everyone is extremely satisfied at this point."

"If re-elected, I am committed to continuing my efforts and goals toward making Arkansas County a better and safer place to live and raise our children.

Sheriff Allen Cheek then gave an update on the adult detention facility. Cheek said they currently have 83 inmates - 61 males and 22 females, of which nine females are State 309 inmates. The juvenile detention facility has nine - six males and three females. The work crew has picked up trash covering 15 miles. Another work crew is still working at the Stuttgart Water Treatment plant. Cheek explained that they generally do not pick up trash on state highways because the state contracts to have it done and some civic clubs adopt portions to keep clean. However, contractors only have to pick up twice a year, and if contacted Cheek will get a crew out if the contractors can't get to it. Cheek also wanted area farmers to know that they can call him at (870) 830-5373 if they notice trash along the highway while mowing.
