In such a referendum conducted by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) last week and attended by more than 10 professors, Prof. George Ibe-Bassey of the faculty of education polled 126 votes or about 75 percent of the total votes cast to beat Prof. Akaneren Essien who is the deputy vice chancellor of the University of Calabar.
Similarly, NASU and ASUU which also conducted their referendum same day gave Ibe-Bassey 499 of the 540 available votes; Prof. Essien equally came second with 23 votes; Prof. Umoh got one vote while Prof. Ekpo got five votes.
