GRANTHAM Athletic Club's open 10km trail race was won by club cross country coach Adam Madge. Run in conjunction with Belton Horse Trials in the grounds of the stately home, the Grantham Cup event attracted 130 athletes from all over the East Midlands. Any illusions the entrants might have had that the course might be a typically flat Lincolnshire one would have been shattered with the appearance of Bellmount Tower through the mist at race half-distance. Following the climb up to the tower, athletes also had to plunge through the 'water jump' at the 8km point. Adam eased home comfortably in 38min 9sec and team-mate Arthur Short continued his recent run of form to pick up prizes for first veteran and third overall.
