Adam Darkins
Adam Darkins MD, MPH, FRCS is the Chief Consultant for Care Coordination at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The Office of Care Coordination is a new program office responsible for a major disease management program deployment that incorporates home telehealth. Adam Darkins previously led the VHA's national telemedicine/telehealth program that is now incorporated into the Office of Care Coordination. VA is among the world leaders in telemedicine and telehealth development. Adam Darkins trained as a neurosurgeon in the UK and undertook research for his doctoral thesis at UCLA in Los Angeles. He established and directed an early telehealth program in the UK based at the King's Fund in London, UK that had links with Dartmouth Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. As the Medical Director of Riverside Community Health Care, a provider of health care to 300,000 people in central London, UK he helped pioneer several major clinical developments involving new models of care including telehealth. Since August 1997 he has lived and worked permanently in the USA. His background as a clinician, health care executive and work in health policy development give him insights into the unique clinical, technical and managerial challenges that are involved in creating telehealth networks. Dr Darkins believes that establishing/maintaining a patient focus to care delivery and having an evidence basis are vital ingredients to dealing with the change management issues associated with introducing new technology cost-effectively into healthcare environments. Adam Darkins has spoken widely on telehealth in the USA, UK and continental Europe. He has published on telehealth topics including clinical risk management in telemedicine, developing a viable business case for telemedicine, contracting for telemedicine services and the physician/patient relationship in telemedicine. He co-authored the book Telemedicine and Telehealth: Principles, Practice, Performance and Pitfalls. Adam Darkins was a founder member of the Royal Society of Medicine's Telemedicine Forum in the UK. He was an elected member of the Council of the Patient's Association in the UK. He was a founder member and on the Board of the Association of Trust Medical Directors, the UK's national Medical Directors organization. He is on the board of the American Telemedicine Association and on the editorial boards of the Telemedicine Journal and E-Health and the Telehealth Practice Report.

In a foreword for the report, Adam Darkins, chief consultant for telehealth services at the VHA's Office of Patient Care Services, calls VHA and NHS "uniquely placed to develop and refine new models of care" that can take advantage of the latest technologies in healthcare.
"'Early adopters' of telehealth are still in relatively short supply," he says.
