Aaron Poetter is the state management biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for the Kuskokwim area.
"We're looking at a very poor chum run right now. Cumulative numbers at the Bethel Test Fishery to date are looking similar to the crash years of 1997 to 2000-2001. It's not a good season for chum salmon this year," said Poetter. Poetter says the Bethel area is experiencing what is normally the midpoint of the run. The cumulative chum numbers at the Bethel Test Fishery are the third-lowest in history for this point. "It is a tough situation. We've had significant restriction because of Chinook salmon concerns the last few years. To back it up this year with another conservative year and to follow it up with a poor chum run is not an ideal situation by any stretch of the imagination," said Poetter. The state plans an opening on July 8, 2015. The state plans an opening on July 8, 2015. Poetter says it's too early to know if the river will make its chum salmon escapement goal. In the meantime, they're proceeding with occasional drift openings. "It's not one of the things where we can just turn off opportunity, that's not just a reality. We're going to move ahead with a conservative approach, which we've taken with the twice-weekly opportunity. We're adjusting it, where we're seeing more effort, we're keeping the opportunity ratcheted down a bit. Where we're seeing less effort, we'll provide more gear or time," said Poetter. Poetter says commercial chum fishing is not in the cards. "At this point, commercial hasn't been in the conversation with a run of this size, it not even at the forefront of conversation, we're not even considering it at this point. I'm not writing it off, but we'd have to see a miraculous change in the chum run before we even start to consider it," said Poetter.
