As a volunteer, Management Committee member, President and now Life President, I have been involved with COA for well over 30 years.
Meetings were held at Central Synagogue with guest speakers and a questionnaire distributed to see what people desired. I became involved delivering meals on a Friday afternoon so people could have fresh meals for Shabbat. Today, thank G-d, we deliver over 30,000 meals per year. As we delivered the meals and went into peoples homes and chatted to them, we noticed that they needed other services. From here our activity centre and home care social worker services were born. COA has given me great satisfaction because I have seen COA grow from nothing to the organisation it is today. I am proud of COA and what has been achieved. It keeps me involved doing something I believe in. Myer believed older people should develop their own system of care and together with other Jewish retirees who shared the vision such as Frank Schaeffer, Eugene Mencel, Dennis Feigen, Aaron Aaron, Hanni Chalmers and Aaron Alexander formed COA. All this while, we got thousands of hours help from our volunteers who supplemented our tiny paid staff. These proceeds and bequests, along with the sale of the Saber Street property, enabled COA, in 1996, to buy the semi at 25 Rowe Street. While working late one evening in 1997, I heard some loud noise. My curiosity piqued, I went outside and saw a "for sale" sign being installed on the adjoining property which we had desperately wanted to buy for a long time. An emergency meeting of the Management was called that Sunday to discuss the prospect of a purchase. Our founding members were all volunteers: Myer Kangan AO OBE, Dennis Feigen, Eugene Mencel, Frank Schaffer, Aaron Aaron, Hanni Chalmers and Aaron Alexander. Harry and Esta Levy had lived in Zambia, where Esta was involved in community work.
