A.J. Spiegel was born and ... [cached]

A.J. Spiegel was born and raised in Peosta, Iowa, which, when he was growing up, was about as close as you could get to the middle of nowhere in northeastern Iowa, about 12 miles west of Dubuque.

Even as late as 1994, the city's population was just 127 people, but that has all changed, mostly because of Spiegel, who in addition to founding Mi-T-M in 1971, has developed and built subdivisions, warehouses and more, as well as donating a state-of-the-art community center to the city.
Today, Peosta has about 1,400 residents, not including those in subdivisions just outside of town. During the workday, there might be as many as 4,000 people in town.
Spiegel is certainly one of the driving forces for the area's growth. Mi-T-M, for example, occupies more than 850,000 sq. ft. in its offices and warehouses and has about 320 employees. That has led to a Federal Express warehouse next door and much more. Spiegel estimates he's probably developed and built 3 million sq. ft. of facilities for the area's industrial park.
Schrack says some privately owned companies are sometimes cramped and unable to expand, but Spiegel's varied interests allows Mi-T-M the luxury of adding another warehouse or more space whenever necessary.
We couldn't do that if A.J. didn't have a construction company that could build it at half the cost of another contractor.
Besides donating the 75,000-sq.-ft. community center - complete with basketball courts, a banquet room that seats 1,200, a track, racquetball courts, a weight room and much more - Spiegel sometimes goes as far as mowing the grass.
"I went home one night and got a call on my cell phone. It was A.J. and he says, 'How come you're going home?' I said, 'It's 6:30 p.m.
That's been one of my biggest things," Spiegel says.
Spiegel initially worked in construction, painting and assembly with companies such as Flexsteel Industries and John Deere Dubuque Works before becoming an independent cleaning and painting contractor.
It was then that he saw a need for a smaller, self-contained and more affordable pressure washer than what was available. He designed and built a 1,000 psi model named the Mighty 1000 and then formed Mi-T-M - an abbreviation of the Mighty 1000 - in 1971.
It's all common sense," Spiegel says.
Among his many interests, he has a warehousing business, a construction business, excavating equipment and more as well as a new bar and grill with a hotel going up in nearby Bellevue, Iowa, which is right on the Mississippi River.
He also recently donated land to a local church for a new school and will help build it as a general contractor through his construction company.

A.J. Spiegel

Early in his career, AJ worked in construction, painting, and assembly with companies such as Flexsteel Industries Inc. and John Deere Dubuque Works before becoming an independent cleaning and painting contractor. He quickly recognized the need for small, self-contained, and affordable cleaning equipment and set out to design and build his first pressure washer, a 1000 PSI model that was aptly named the Mighty 1000.
