Builders Without Borders is providing the Project Managemrent Services to the Canadian Construction Association for the design and construction of the school. During the pre-construction stage, Builders Without Borders undertook the following tasks: Assembled the Canadian Haiti Management Team Identified and introduced CCA to the Lakay school project Engaged the Canadian Structural Engineers Fast and Epp Engaged MASAADA as the Haiti project site inspectors Met with the SalÉsien owners in Haiti to determine the design build process Recommended to take a widely used, but poorly applied, Haitian concrete block building system and make it into an efficient earthquake resistant structural system. This approach of improving upon an existing building system is both time and cost-effective Coordinated the local soils inspection study Short listed six Haitian general contractors to bid the construction work Coordinated the design of the two story structure with a second floor steel option for steel donations from Canada Tacloban, Philippines Daniel S. Bulante Elementary School Start: 2014 Complete: 2014 Destroyed Daniel S. Bulante School Close up of Bulante School destruction On November 8, the 250 km an hour Typhoon Haiyan destroyed 6 million homes in the Philippines. The three room Daniel S.Bulante school has been severely damaged and needs a new roof, a new ceiling and repairs to the walls. The children are unable to attend school until these repairs are completed. The Elementary School is 13 kilometres from Tacloban City, the city that suffered the most damage from Typhoon Haiyan. Within days a team from Builders Without Borders and members of the Rotary Club of Vancouver Fraserview, the Rotary Club of Tacloban and Rotary Club of San Juanico in the Philippines undertook assessment of the damage and a plan to repair the school . The estimated cost to repair the Elementary School is $US 20,000. Builders Without Borders is will be responsible for managing the construction, and is planning a full inspection of the site for mid February.
