Kailash Sahu comes from a small village called Bellagam, in the coastal state of Orissa in India. He completed M.Sc. (Physics) from Berhampur University, Orissa, with Gold Medal for securing First position in First class in the University. He then completed his Ph.D. from Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, India. Dr. Sahu is currently an Associate Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute. Recently, his research efforts have focused on "search for extrasolar planets", through a large HST program called SWEEPS (Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Planet Search), of which Dr. Sahu is the principal investigator. This program led to the discovery of 16 planet candidates, including 5 ultra-short-period planets. These results are published in the October 5, 2006 issue of Nature. There was a NASA Science Update (http://hubblesite.org/newscenter/newsdesk/archive/releases/2006/34) on 4 October 2006 based on these results, which was televised live on NASA TV, USA.
