Biography

Kristen M. Putnam-Walkerly, MSWKristen Putnam-Walkerly has worked with and advised foundations and non-profit organizations since 1990. Over the course of her career she has served as a grantmaker, consultant, facilitator, evaluator, project manager, and board member. In 1999, Mrs. Putnam-Walkerly established the philanthropy consulting firm Putnam Community Investment Consulting. PCIC helps foundations and nonprofits assess need, develop effective programs, align organizational strategies, and evaluate impact.Mrs. Putnam-Walkerly has consulted with numerous foundations to help them plan and implement grantmaking programs in the areas of leadership development, child and adolescent health, youth development, health access, substance abuse treatment, homelessness, elder abuse prevention, economic development, evaluation, and organizational capacity building. Recent and current clients include the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Rapides Foundation, Stuart Foundation, California HealthCare Foundation, Northern California Grantmakers, and Hispanics in Philanthropy. She has advised foundations on grant proposals and programs ranging from $10,000 to $14 million, and served as consulting program officer for The California Endowment as well as for the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Horizons Foundation.In additional to developing grantmaking programs, Mrs. Putnam-Walkerly has extensive experience designing, managing, and conducting evaluations. Recent projects include assessing Grantseeker perceptions of The James Irvine Foundation’s New Connections Fund, determining the impact of the Blue Shield of California Foundation’s core support initiative, evaluating the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund’s Elder Abuse Prevention Initiative, and evaluating the Tariq Khamisa Foundation ‘s youth violence prevention programs. Social market research she conducted for Communications Sciences Group led to the development of television ads designed to prevent teen pregnancy and the creation of the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center.Mrs. Putnam-Walkerly holds a Masters in Social Work from San Francisco State University and a Bachelors Degree in Anthropology and Political Science from Indiana University. She studied foreign policy at American University, and anthropology at the School for International Training in Ecuador, South America. Mrs. Putnam-Walkerly is co-founder and co-chair of the Philanthropy Consultants Network, chairs the Membership Task Force of the National Network of Consultants to Grantmakers, and is a member of the American Evaluation Association, Hispanics in Philanthropy, and Bay Area Blacks in Philanthropy.
