Biography

Andrew Harver, PhD is Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Behavior and Administration in the College of Health and Human Services at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Harver joined the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1991 as a member of the Department of Psychology in the Colleges of Arts and Sciences where he achieved the rank of full professor in 2001. He worked as the 2000-2001 faculty associate in the Provost’s Office and served during 2001-2002 as Interim Associate Dean of the Graduate School. A member of the Institutional Review Board for Research with Human Subjects at UNC Charlotte from 1992-2000, he served as Committee Chair during 2000-2001 as the institution secured a Federal-Wide Assurance (FWA) for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research. He continues to maintain keen interest in the ethics of human subjects research including relations among scientific quality, research risks, and participant benefits.Before moving to Charlotte, he held teaching and research positions at Ohio University and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He also served as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Department of Physiology at Dartmouth Medical School. Harver holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, and master’s and doctoral degrees from Ohio University in Athens.Dr. Harver was an invited member of the American Thoracic Society Committee on Dyspnea (1995-1998) and a member of the ATS Membership Committee (2001-2003). He also has served the Behavioral Science Assembly as Chair-elect and Chair of the Program Committee (1998-2000), and as a member of the Long Range Planning Committee (1999-2001). He was a member of the Editorial Board Chest (1999-2004), and served as President of the International Society for the Advancement of Respiratory Psychophysiology (1999-2000). His research program results from a blend of training and interests in experimental psychology, respiratory physiology, and pulmonary medicine. Harver has published 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters; and made 100 presentations at national and international scientific meetings. His work examines factors that affect the perception of dyspnea, or shortness of breath, in patients with obstructive lung disease, as well as the impact of these factors on the management of disease. His research is currently supported by a major grant from the National Institutes of Health (5R01HL068706-03), Project on TRAC: Improving Asthma Control in Children. He is co-editor (with Harry Kotses) of the volume, Self-Management of Asthma (1998); and, is currently preparing (with Harry Kotses) a second volume titled, Asthma, Health, and Society. Harver has been married to Nancy Hall Harver for 22 years. They have two children: Philip, a rising sophomore at The University of North Carolina at Asheville; and Emma, a rising sophomore at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte.July 7, 2006
