Biography

FOR 22 YEARS Patrick has been a fund development professional for private colleges, social services and healthcare. Prior to this he was a hospital public relations/media relations officer and a newspaper journalist. He has a Bachelors degree in Journalism from the University of Montana, Missoula, and has written for newspapers in Pennsylvania and Montana, primarily in the areas of politics and government. His career path has taken him from Pennsylvania to California, Montana, Idaho, Kansas, Iowa and Minnesota. A number of his professional positions have been in rural communities ranging in size from 10,000 to 60,000 people. His widely ranging development experience includes managing corporation and foundation relations, annual giving, and major and planned gift development. He has directed fund development offices in higher education, social services and healthcare. A focus has been helping to launch new development programs and renewing those not realizing their full potential. He has staffed four capital campaigns, two of which he also directed. These campaigns have had a combined $100 million-dollar impact on the institutions employing him.Patrick has been a member of the National Committee on Planned Giving and the Minnesota Planned Giving Council. Earlier in his career he served as president of the Montana chapter of the Association of Healthcare Professionals and, at another time, president of the Montana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. He has been an elected school board member. Currently he chairs his local Saint Paul district council board.Through his many years of helping nonprofits, Patrick has formed a deep appreciation for the significant contributions made by highly motivated development staffs dedicated to the missions of their employers. Nurturing that and the next generation of professionals are important tasks, he says.
