Biography

An accomplished trainer, writer, teacher, and coach, Peter currently serves as an organizational performance consultant with the United States Coast Guard. Assigned to the Hampton Roads' based Atlantic Area, his primary focus is on the implementation of the Criteria for Performance Excellence, the Coast Guard's leadership and management framework based on the internationally recognized Baldrige Criteria. His areas of professional interest include facilitation & meeting management, conflict management & dispute resolution, organizational leadership, and knowledge management. He works with leaders at all levels of the Coast Guard to assist them in implementing processes and systems which support the Criteria.

In his volunteer life, he is a member of the Tidewater Critical Incident Stress Management Team; the team provides crisis intervention services to emergency services personnel in southeastern Virginia and is composed of 70 mental health providers, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, rescue personnel, and military members who provide a broad, complete program of crisis intervention interventions. Peter is the clinical director, responsible for setting organizational direction and aligning all activities to meet established goals.

Peter is also a 28-year member of the Coast Guard Reserve and is currently on the Active Status List. Most recently, he served as the Operations Officer at Port Security Unit 305 based at Fort Eustis and was responsible for 80 unit members and all unit operations. Prior to this assignment, Peter was the Senior Reserve Officer at Coast Guard Group Hampton Roads, the boat operations, multi-mission, prevention & response arm of the Coast Guard in the southern Chesapeake Bay and Port of Hampton Roads. As the senior reservist assigned to the Group, Peter was responsible for assisting Coast Guard units in their use and support reserve personnel; he was also the alternate deputy group commander, responsible for serving as the deputy commander in his absence.

Peter's former Coast Guard military assignments include a six-year tour as a maritime search & rescue controller at Rescue Coordination Center Norfolk and two seasons as the executive petty officer at Station Plum Island, Wisconsin. He is a former small boat coxswain and was responsible for the safe prosecution of search & rescue and law enforcement missions on Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

Peter is a former high school teacher, technical writer, consultant, and trainer. As a six-year teacher at Wyoming Seminary, Peter taught English, history, and theatre. He also coached lacrosse, serving as the head varsity coach for three years. He served as the technical director of the Buckingham Performing Arts Center and also directed full-length stage plays. He served as the faculty advisor to several groups including a chapter of the Irving Society, a creative writing club, and of Amnesty International. Peter lived in a dormitory, serving as the faculty leader for the upper class boys' dormitory. As a technical writer, consultant, and trainer, Peter has worked on contracts for the U.S. Army, the Environmental Protection Agency, Front Royal Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Warren County, and All-in-One Recycling.

Peter is a poet whose work has been seen in The Powhatan Review, The Trinity Review, Silences, and Yes. Peter edits an online poetry magazine (Poetry 360 at http:poetry360.blogspot.com), providing a place for beginning and experienced poets to publish good, solid, lyric and narrative poetry. Peter also blogs, posting to his Tidewater Musings and his Notes Along the Elizabeth whenever he can carve out the time.

Peter lives in Portsmouth, Virginia, with his wife Jenny and his four rambunctious sons, Andrew (a high school student), Richard (a young teenager), Elliot (a pre-schooler), and Jack (toddler). He enjoys sailing, reading, walking & hiking, and cooking & eating.
