David Ahlstrom (Ph.D., New York University) is a Professor of Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he has taught courses in strategic management, management of technology, global strategy and international relations for global managers, usually teaching five to six courses per year, since 1996. He also sometimes teaches a management course in The Chinese University School of Medicine, which helps the students prepare for the Royal College of Medicine (UK) board certification exam in Public Health. He won the first University-wide Exemplary Teaching Award in 1999, and more recently the Faculty of Business Teaching award (in 2004), and the OneMBA Global Executive Program Teacher of the Year Award (2005). While at NYU-Stern, David was also awarded the Stern School of Business Outstanding Teacher Award, in 1995. Professor Ahlstrom's graduate degrees are in management and international business, and he also a degree in History and graduate coursework in international relations and Asian Studies. Professor Ahlstrom is a member of the Academy of Management as well as several other academic associations. He served as the Interactive Papers (IPS) Chair for the 2002 Academy of Management Conference in Denver and was the Newman Award Chair for the 2004 Academy of Management Conference in New Orleans . He also serves on the editorial boards for the Asia Pacific Journal of Management, the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Small Business Research and the SAM Advanced Management Journal . For Professor Ahlstrom's research, he has been studying management and entrepreneurship in transition economies with an emphasis on firms situated in Greater China. His research has examined firm turnaround in East Asia , the nature of entrepreneurship and venture capital in Asia and strategic alliance partner selection preferences by firms based in transition economies. He has published approximately 100 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and conference papers in total, and a textbook on international management. The articles have appeared in a variety of journals including Academy of Management Review , Academy of Management Executive , Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Entrepreneurship: Theory and Practice, the Journal of World Business, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, the Journal of Business Venturing, and the Journal of Management Studies. Professor Ahlstrom worked in the Asia-Pacific region in the computer field for several years before teaching in the U.S. and now in Hong Kong . He has lived approximately 20 years in the Pacific Rim region. He reads and speaks some Chinese and Japanese. He is active in a local church in Hong Kong .
