Jim is an experienced professional with over 30 years of experience in accounting and tax consulting. He holds a bachelor's degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Redlands (1972) and a Masters Degree in Taxation program from Golden Gate University (2002). He received his CPA certificate in 1974. Jim is an Associate Member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and a Member of the AICPA's Litigation Services Section. Jim began his accounting career in the audit department of KPMG Peat Marwick in 1972. In 1975 he transferred to the Tax Department and rose to the level of Senior Manager. In 1978 and 1979, he was assigned to the Professional Development Department of the firm's Executive Office in New York City. During this period, he coordinated the education programs for the firm's partners and managers and was a national instructor. In 1980, Jim returned to the Los Angeles Office serving financial, aerospace, and retail clients as well as international financial institutions. In 1985 he resigned to form Schaefer & Company. In the years that followed, key Los Angeles contacts have directed sophisticated accouting and tax work to Schaefer & Company. Jim has responded in designing Schaefer & Company by combining talented professionals with big firm experience and efficient technology tools beyond what is in every day use at national accounting firms. His emphasis is not service or efficiency -- rather it is both. Jim's industry accounting experience includes serving manufacturing, retail, high/ultra net worth individuals, distributorships, executive aircraft, international transactions, receiverships, financial institutions, biotech and high tech companies. In recent years, forensic accounting assignments have become significant to the practice. These assignments include family law engagements as well as SEC originated receiverships and related litigation support services. Jim has been qualified in federal court as an expert witness. Jim has lectured nationally. He has been quoted in the New York Times and the Economist. In February 2003, Jim was featured in the cover story for Accounting Technology Magazine and is frequently quoted in Practical Accountant Magazine.
