HOTEL THERAPISTThere are times in life when we must face the inevitable. Inevitably it would have to happen sooner or later. A depressed, drunken, suicidal 18 year old male returned from a long day of work at a local carnival. In the bathroom he locked the door behind him. To his girlfriend checking on him every so often, he kept replying “Just a few more minutes” The next thing she heard was a thump. A knock at the bathroom door yielded no response. She ran out of the room to get her friends in a nearby room who charged in the room and kicked in the bathroom door. They found the guy hanging from the shower curtain rod by his shoe laces. They pulled him down, called 911 and began CPR. Meanwhile back home I was sound asleep, the phone rang to a desperate screaming cry of “oh, my god, he hung himself, help me Jim, help!” At that moment my fire company pager tones out for a full cardiac arrest, CPR in progress, medic assist at the Francis Scott Key. Jumping out of bed I made it to the Motel in record time. First comforting my night auditor, then to assist the police in their report. 15 minutes later all the police, firefighters, paramedics, flashing lights and radio noise were gone. Just like nothing had happened. They got the guy breathing again. We didn’t charge them for the broken door and shower curtain rod. We figured they had much bigger problems to deal with.
