Hardin County Government Mission Statement: Our goal is to maximize all available resources by providing professionally planned and executed public programs, infrastructure, and services to our citizens.
How we fit into the Commonwealth: Hardin County is the fourth largest or Kentucky's 120 counties. We have 628 square miles and a population of approximately 100,000 people. Only 55% of our residents are native Kentuckians, 37% of us moved here from other states and 8% chose to relocate from other countries. However, our diversity does not stop there. Almost 25% of our population is comprised of various races and ethnic cultures including strong leadership in our African-American citizens as well as our growing Hispanic and Asian communities.
Historical Information: Hardin County was formed in 1792 and by 1843, was divided into seven counties. In 1853 development of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad made significant changes to our region. Today, the county is composed of several rural communities as well as six incorporated cities - Elizabethtown (the county seat), Radcliff, Vine Grove, Upton, Sonora, and West Point. Our geographic location in the center of America's Heartland places us within a day's drive of 67% of the Nation's population.
New Growth in our Regional Health Care and Emergency Services: Hardin Memorial Hospital is the largest county-owned hospital in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with 300 licensed beds and 1,500 employees. The newest expansions to our hospital include two wings containing state-of-the-art in medical equipment and technology for women's health care, endoscopy, and out patient surgical care. We recently constructed a new Emergency Services Center, which houses the main county ambulance station as well as Emergency Management Services and County Coroner.
Public Library Facilities : A new facility in Elizabethtown and a recent renovation of the north branch library in Radcliff are good resources for our citizens. These facilities offer a variety of materials, exhibits, and reading programs geared toward the diverse interests of our citizens.
In closing, the greatness of our county is rooted in the goodness of our people, their values, talents, and enthusiasm. Together we are continuously working to improve the quality of life within our community. We are focused on creating a county that provides unlimited opportunity for citizens through education programs for our youth, business and career opportunities, and quality public services for all our citizens. Hardin County is a great place to live, raise a family, and to start a business. Please come visit us to see firsthand the possibilities our community offers to you and your family!
