Description
The Commission Project, Inc. (TCP) is a nonprofit organization that fosters creativity through music education by commissioning original music and producing workshops and composer-in-residence programs in public schools nationwide.
TCP's composer-in-residence programs enrich existing school curricula by involving students directly in the creative process: establishing exploratory forums, which spark creativity and inventiveness. From the onset, the composer involves students in the creative journey, making artistic decisions and incorporating their input in the compositional process.
The Commission Project is teaching our youth the critical thinking and problem solving skills necessary to the success of the individual student and the community at large. TCP programs and activities also help preserve American musical heritage, develop new audiences for live jazz and classical music performance and foster the creation of contemporary music. During the 2005-2006 academic year, there were 2,935 students working with 38 composers and performers in 39 Commission Project sponsored programs, which culminated in the creation and performance of over 37 new titles.
Since 1994, TCP has benefited over 23,000 students in 93 schools nationwide by commissioning 124 composers to write nearly 400 pieces for student ensembles, 104 are published; 33 have been commercially recorded and released.
In the 2006-2007 academic year, The Commission Project will produce over 40 residencies in metropolitan areas across the United States and Canada. TCP is transforming the way youth are being educated, helping students discover the excitement and rewards of creation.
