The University of Manchester (http://www.manchester.ac.uk) , created from the merger of The Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST in October 2004, is the UK's largest university with 9,000 staff (over 3,800 academic staff) and 28,802 full-time-equivalent students and an income of £490.5m. Research is at the heart of The University of Manchester. Many of the major advances of the 20th century began there, including work by Rutherford leading to the splitting of the atom and the development of the world's first modern computer. Historically, no fewer than 23 former staff and students have gone on to become Nobel Prizewinners. The University generates in excess of £100m in funding each year. The University's commitment to research excellence is clearly demonstrated by investment in facilities which make such world-leading research possible. The University of Manchester administers some of the most prestigious academic-related services and support facilities. These include one of the largest academic libraries in the UK and one of the largest academic computing facilities in Europe. The John Rylands University Library is the University of Manchester's library and information service. It is the largest non-legal-deposit academic library in the United Kingdom and supports all subject areas taught by the University. The JRUL provides its members with a large number of services and resources, including the most extensive range of electronic resources of any UK Higher Education library. A range of services is also provided for members of the public, schools and commercial companies. It holds more than four million separate items, including some of the greatest printed books and manuscripts.
