Description
Over these 100 years, we have been served by 17 ministers. 3 Licensed Ministers, l certified Lay Minister and 2 Interim Pastors. We have been blessed with many excellent teachers and leaders. Our consistory officers are dedicated beyond words and second to none. They are: President: Betsy Sendi, Vice-President: Doug Porter, Secretary Sandy Brown, Asst. Secretary: Vi Sloan, Treasurer: Doug Tomsic, Asst. Treasurer: Cindy Porter.
We had 3 confirmands: Jasmin and Jessica Tropf and Nichole Wharton.
As we plan monthly celebrations leading up to our October celebration, we are in the duel process of beginning a search for a full time pastor. Our search committee asks for your prayers. We had a variety of dinners and ecumenical events that allowed us to be in fellowship with our brothers and sisters. One service that is well attended is the Thanksgiving Eve service. Of course a highlight of our year is the Birmingham Ethnic Festival. It is wonderful to see the congregation work together. We are always delighted to share and present our Hungarian heritage.
In late August, Calvin called Rev. Edwin Heilman to serve as our Interim Pastor. Attendance and giving are up and the congregation is moving forward as we give thanks for sending us a minister who is not Hungarian yet appreciates our traditions and heritage. He works closely in partnership with our Licensed Minister, Marie Wharton. We have combined English-Hungarian language worship services.
Our mission work continues as we sponsor and work at the neighborhood food pantry along with our sister churches in Birmingham. We collect warm clothing for the children at Birmingham Elementary School. Our youth made food baskets for Thanksgiving and collected money for Christmas. We are privileged to share from our bounty and blessings given to us by our generous Father.
This has been a year of much reflection and prayer as we seek to do God's will. It has at times been very difficult, yet we look to the Light with love, faith and hope for God has guided us for 100 years. We do not know what lies before us, yet we feel the Holy Spirit with us. We turn to the faith our forefathers and foremothers had when they crossed that vast ocean. Their blood is in us, their faith is a beacon to us that calls us to serve this church of Jesus Christ, this sanctuary we come to as one people - our beloved Calvin United Church of Christ. May God grant you peace and good health.
