Summary

Description
Portland Secondary College is located in the City of Portland (population 8000) within the Shire of Glenelg, approximately 400 kilometres from Melbourne, close to the South Australian border in the south west of Victoria and provides a challenging and comprehensive curriculum with the flexibility to meet the needs of each of its 750 students.

The College structure is based on 6 year levels, each with a Level Manager who creates a supportive and friendly atmosphere for all students. A core program is offered at Years 7 and 8 providing courses in The Arts, Mathematics, English, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, Technology, Health & Physical Education and Languages Other Than English. The Year 9 and 10 program is a combination of core studies and extensions. A wide range of studies is offered at VCE level including the Victorian Certificate of Vocational Education and some vocational courses.

Special features of the wider school curriculum include programs in Outdoor Education, Music, Excellence in Science, Technology and extension programs for talented students as well as programs for "Students at Risk" which support our motto of "Creating the Opportunities".

Portland Secondary College places a strong emphasis on the welfare and well being of its school community. Its mission statement is to develop each student socially, physically and academically, in a safe, caring, yet challenging environment. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to participate in all College activities both in and out of the classroom.

College Council, in conjunction with the College staff, believe students should be challenged and extended, offered success in worthwhile learning and given the chance to take increasing responsibility for their own education. These approaches will contribute to students' self-esteem and to their growing sense of the wider society.

Co-operative learning is a key strategy used in the College; as is cooperative teamwork with staff. Through an education of this kind, the College will make its contribution to both equity and excellence.
