Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. is engaged in developing, manufacturing and marketing an anesthesia monitoring system named BIS system. The BIS system is based on the Bispectral Index (BIS Index) technology. The BIS system provides information that allows clinicians to assess and manage a patient’s level of consciousness in the operating room, intensive care and procedural sedation settings and is intended to assist the clinician in better determining the amount of anesthesia or sedation needed by each patient. The BIS system includes the BIS monitor, BIS Module Kit or BISx system, which allows original equipment manufacturers to incorporate the BIS index into their monitoring products, and a group of sensor products, referred as BIS Sensors. During the year ended December 31, 2007, the global installed base of BIS monitors and original equipment manufacturer products was approximately 47,400 units.
