Description

James River Coal Company mines, processes and sells bituminous, steam- and industrial-grade coal through six operating subsidiaries (mining complexes) located throughout eastern Kentucky and in southern Indiana. As of December 31, 2007, the Company’s six mining complexes include 15 underground mines, 11 surface mines and 10 preparation plants, four of which have integrated rail loadout facilities, and three of which use a common loadout facility at a separate location. As of December 31, 2007, James River Coal Company estimated that it controlled approximately 267.9 million tons of proven and probable coal reserves. During the year ended December 31, 2007, the Company produced 11.2 million tons of coal and it purchased another 880,000 tons for resale. Of the 11.1 million tons the Company produced from Company-operated mines, approximately 66% came from underground mines, while the remaining 34% came from surface mines.
