Carlisle SynTec's Sure-Weld TPO Mechanically-Fastened Roofing System was installed on the massive, 1.5 million square foot P&G warehouse (upper right) in record time. CARLISLE, PA--Located along the Flint River in southern Georgia, Albany was founded by Nelson Tift in 1836. Tift was a visionary man who hoped that the settlement's river location would lend itself to becoming similar in trade and commerce to its namesake, Albany, NY. Proctor & Gamble shared the same vision of growth for Albany, opening a plant there in 1972. Today, that facility employs more than 1,500 and P&G has invested over $800 million into the Albany site. P&G Albany decided to expand operations and planned to build a massive warehouse requiring 1.5 million square feet of single-ply roofing membrane to accommodate the continued growth for the corporation's paper product line. The half-mile-in-length warehouse would be located adjacent to the plant and would store millions of rolls of paper goods. In order to keep from interrupting or disturbing operations, P&G requested the entire structure be built in six months. To meet this demanding and ambitious goal, Carlisle SynTec was called upon for the roofing portion of the project. "In order to meet the needs of P&G, we were looking for a system that was economical and could be installed quickly," Allen Brown, project manager and architect for H+M Architects/Engineers, Inc., explained. "We specified Carlisle's Sure-Weldâ„¢ TPO Mechanically-Fastened Roofing System because it would go down fast and is a proven system we had success with in the past." Mid-South Roof Systems, the applicator chosen by H+M Company, Inc., was up to the challenge. Armed with Carlisle's 10-foot by 200-foot rolls of Sure-Weld 45-mil Reinforced Membrane, the crew of 13 began the 1,430,000-square-foot roofing project with the objective of finishing in record time. Seventy-five truckloads of material including insulation, membrane and accessories, 33 miles of heat welded seams, and 23 days later, the roofing project was a wrap. "Carlisle's large rolls of Sure-Weld membrane and the product's superior weldability allowed us to complete the project in less than a month," Johnny Penton, project superintendent for Mid-South Roof Systems, said. "But, this was a team effort. We had unprecedented coordination of Carlisle Sure-Weld materials along with H+M Company's outstanding support. Having unlimited access to the roof played a major role in the handling of equipment. Also, materials were stored strategically on every delivery. We simply couldn't have completed this job so quickly without the excellent orchestration between all parties." In almost every industry, time is money. According to project manager Allen Brown, Sure-Weld membrane's larger rolls reduce the number of seams to be welded and decrease installation time, and less membrane is lost under the welded seam. This means applicators save labor, time and materials--all of which contribute to a fast and economical roofing installation. "We were pleased and the building owner was pleased because it went down fast allowing construction inside the building to begin in less than a month," Brown said. Working seven days a week, Mid-South's crew began the installation by attaching Carlisle's 1.5 inch polyisocyanurate insulation to the structural steel deck using Carlisle fasteners. The 10-foot by 200-foot rolls of Sure-Weld TPO were carefully maneuvered onto the roof. The 45-mil reinforced membrane was attached to the insulation using Carlisle HP-X Fasteners and Piranha Platesâ„¢. Adjoining sheets of Sure-Weld membrane were then welded together using efficient hot air welding equipment. Sure-Weld membrane welds at fast speeds--10 to 15 feet per minute at relatively low temperatures. In addition to decreasing installation time, Carlisle's Sure-Weld thermoplastic polyolefin membrane offers system strength and reflectivity with dimensional stability while maximizing the benefits of heat-welded seams. The membrane's smooth appearance produces a "total surface fusion weld" creating a continuous monolithic roofing assembly where the field seams are actually stronger than the membrane itself. Furthermore, Sure-Weld membrane's smooth surface resists dirt and debris pickup as well as microorganism infestation. As a result, the membrane maintains a clean appearance and a high reflectivity value throughout its life cycle. "We are not only pleased with the speed of the application, we are pleased with the final results," Russell Neill, Project Superintendent of H+M Company, Inc., said. As the Design-Build firm, H+M's selection of a roofing applicator was extremely important to achieve the desired results. "Mid-South's crew has been expertly trained and they have a great industry reputation." Ron Head, Carlisle's Product Manager-Sure-Weld Roofing Systems, commented, "We understand labor and time can be just as important as quality when selecting a roofing system. We continue to research and develop products like Carlisle's larger rolls of membrane and systems that can reduce labor and time to provide ideal options for unique situations. Additionally, we have a complementing line of pre-fabricated accessories and are continually developing innovative system enhancements." P&G had a vision for growth and entrusted it with Carlisle SynTec and those that made this project happen. Not only was the completed project a success, it was finished in record time. Mid-South Roof Systems, located in Atlanta, GA, has been a Carlisle Authorized Applicator for 10 years. In addition, Mid-South has been recognized for six consecutive years as a Carlisle ESP Member. ESP (Excellence in Single Ply) Membership is based upon annual qualifications. Quality installation achievements and Carlisle membrane- and product- purchases are factored into annual qualifications. In its 7th year, the ESP Program designates 100+ domestic Authorized Applicators and eight Canadian Applicators. Of Carlisle's 1700 Authorized Applicators, these roofing contractors have heavily invested their time and effort into becoming a part of a most elite group. Carlisle SynTec Incorporated has been a leading manufacturer of single-ply roofing systems and products for more than 40 years.
