Summary

Industry:  Colleges & Universities

Description
The University of Ulster is a dynamic and innovative institution. Its performance in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, in which its international reputation as a groundbreaking research centre was greatly enhanced, demonstrates its commitment to high quality research across each of its four campuses and across all disciplines. For a young and vibrant University to have achieved such quality across the board in a short time is outstanding.

Research continues to be a key component of the University's strategic plan and the University's research base has expanded and strengthened rapidly in quality and funding over the last five years:

Since the last RAE in 1996, the University has invested over £50m million in research geared to building Northern Ireland's knowledge economy in the new century.

In addition, £24m has been invested in developing Science Research Parks at our Magee, Coleraine and Jordanstown campuses.

The University has established 14 spinout companies, with a further three to go live in the next few months.

The University has also established a £10m venture capital fund to help foster innovation, primarily in biotechnology and computing science.

Through its research the University makes a major contribution to the R&D capacity within Northern Ireland. This in turn supports the development of local industry, the community and voluntary sector, the creative industries and social and cultural development. The University's research profile and its role as a leading regional university is strengthened through its collaborative links with universities, research bodies and other agencies locally nationally and internationally.

The University's research capability and its reputation for a strong research focus are major factors in attracting and retaining high calibre academic and research staff whose research expertise in turn influences the quality of teaching and informs course and curriculum development.
