Description
Meriton was founded this year by executives from Newbridge (acquired last year by Alcatel), Siemens, JDS Uniphase and Cisco; it closed a $24m first round of funding in September, led by Sierra Ventures and Newbury Ventures. A good number of the company's employees on both the management and R&D sides were involved with the development of Newbridge's 361170, which evolved into Alcatel's 760 routing switch platform, one of the cornerstones of that company's next-generation network strategy. However, much of Meriton's expertise is trained at management software, with 70% of its R&D focused on software. Pitched at the metro core network, Meriton's strategy of incorporating an electrical switch fabric is intriguing in light of the emphasis on deploying all-optical equipment in the metro core network to strip out capital costs. Since the components involved in the conversion from optical to electrical to optical are the most costly element of optical equipment, few equipment vendors, apart from grooming switch vendors, have followed the same path as Meriton. However, the company is confident that it can bring down the cost of electrical components to make its hybrid switch at a fifth of the cost of alternative technologies, but still maintain support for ATM, Sonet, IP, Gigabit Ethernet and storage area networks. Of the company's workforce of about 95 employees, roughly 80% are currently involved in R&D.
