Description
Young Professionals for International Cooperation (YPIC) is a program of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) that seeks to engage young professionals in discussions of international affairs, emphasizing the importance of multilateral cooperation and the UN.
The UNA-National Capital Area (NCA) YPIC supports the mission of UNA-USA YPIC and is committed to providing information and opportunities to young professionals and students in the area. UNA-NCA YPIC holds several events each year through its committees (Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Middle East, Human Rights, International Law, International Economics, Sustainable Development, Peace and Security, Women's Issues and Taste Of).
Our events range from cultural, to policy discussion, to career opportunities, to networking and to social.
Policy discussions have touched on the diagnosis of democracy in Latin America and China; the UN's role in the Middle East; improving coordination between international and local organizations; disaster relief and its effect on women; human trafficking; recognition of minority rights; and income disparities in Latin America.
Panelist have come from US Agency for International Development, Organization of American States, Partner of the Americas, Chemonics International, International Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, Inter-American Development Bank, Inter-American Dialogue, Vital Voices for Global Partnership, Solidarity Center, China Support Network, Harvard, International Republican Institute, Johns Hopkins University, Department of State, International Organization for Migration, Coptic Orphans, Holy Land Ecumenical Foundation and Middle East Fellowship.
YPIC has also reached out to the UN to participate at policy events giving the audience the UN's perspective on various issues. UN panelists at our events have included Douglas Keh of UNDP; John Fredriksson of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; Sarah Craven of the UN Population Fund and Katherine Marshall of the World Bank.
Career events have helped participants get an overview of careers in the international realm and given them opportunities to network. Our past Career Fair attracted close to 200 participants. The YPIC mentoring program, subdued career events, allows our senior, more experienced members to give YPIC'ers an idea of how to get into the international field. DACOR BACON, a subset of this program, consists of foreign affairs veterans offering young professionals a wealth of stories, advice, and contacts. The program is becoming popular at area schools as evidenced by an article written in a George Mason University publication.
One of our premier social events is the Taste of program. The Taste of Series, typically incorporate many aspects of a nation including its culture, food, geography, and interactions with the UN. UNA-NCA members are treated not only to remarks from the Ambassador about the nation's work with the UN, but also may enjoy cultural performances and enjoy traditional food and beverage in the sophisticated surroundings of the embassy. Embassies are also encouraged to provide tourist information for members wishing to visit the country. After remarks by the Ambassador and a substantive Question and Answer session, UNA-NCA members and guests sample national delicacies. Just some of the embassies that hosted us were Lithuania, Bulgaria and Liberia. Another cultural event in the mold of the Taste of was the celebration of the Persian "New Year day" (in partnerships with Women in Politics Institute and Community Help in Music Education) which attracted close to 80 participants.
In addition to the committees mentioned above, UNA-NCA YPIC also has a Secretariat with the following committees: Membership, Research, Media and Press Team, and Social.
If you are interested in joining YPIC, please join UNA-USA first. We are always looking for committed, reliable and enthusiastic persons to join our committees too! If you are interested in joining a UNA-NCA YPIC committee, please send an e-mail with:
1. A one paragraph bio (in lieu of a resume)
2. E-mail and phone number
3. The committee of your interest, and
4. Any questions you might have to ypicmembership@unanca.org.
Committees meet once a month and often at a restaurant, coffee house or office. Membership in each varies quite a lot. On average, committees possess more than 4 and less than 10 members. YPIC Happy Hours are held to build the esprit de corps among the committees. While we appreciate supporters of all ages, YPIC members are typically between the ages of 21-40.
YPIC provides an exciting opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals and gives young professionals from all walks of life a unique forum in which to learn more about current international issues, the UN, and the work of UNA-USA.
Come experience the fun and excitement of YPIC!
