Description
Since 1990 CitiHope International has procured, delivered and distributed more than $200 million in assistance to the Republic of Belarus. Having received 70% of the radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986, this assistance was and is desperately needed.

A visit to the Former Soviet Union (FSU) in 1989 by CitiHope's President Paul Moore, Vice President Paul Moore II and Board Chairman Dr. Michael Christensen was prompted by a NY Times report on Chernobyl and the catastrophic health care crisis in Belarus due to exposure to radioactive contaminants. Visiting the Minsk Oncology Center and seeing children with advanced stages of Leukemia, Hodgkin's disease and thyroid lymphomas, with little or no medicine for treatment, led CitiHope to dedicate itself to saving the lives of children in Belarus.

Over sixty-five missions later, we have a full time in-country staff, a strong medical program, a volunteer initiative, a mother and child healthcare program, and have participated in primary healthcare reform programs. CitiHope is thrilled to continue keeping faith with the "Children of Chernobyl" generation.

Over the past nine years, the current political leadership has intentionally acted to obstruct our work. Thankfully, long term relationships established at the grassroots level, and the US State Department's commitment to CitiHope's work in the region, has allowed CHI programs to proceed in Belarus without interruption. A grant from the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation enabled CitiHope to succeed at a clinical breast cancer screening program, complementing past pharmaceutical deliveries.

Radioactive nuclides ninety times more powerful than Hiroshima fell on this tiny Eastern European country ... and the resulting problems haven't gone away. Not surprisingly, America's compassionate response hasn't gone away either. That American compassion and generosity have been leading factors in Belarusian people finding hope for the future ... hope that has risen from the very ashes of a place called Chernobyl.

With support from the Belarusian Ministry of Health, the US Embassy in Minsk and the US State Department's Operation Provide Hope program, CitiHope is proud to carry on with essential help into the future.

CitiHope's mission in Belarus is full of miracles and challenges, and we have been blessed to be American representatives of God's healing power in this courageous, hospitable land. We are thankful to each individual donor, corporate donor and volunteer for sharing this bold journey with us.
