Description
Iowa Christian Academy (ICA) was founded in 1999. It was started by a group of parents, teachers and community leaders who had a heart for Christian education and a strong calling to deliver it in a different way.
The vision laid on the hearts of the founders by God was to create an independent, interdenominational Christian School System - a system built on the shared belief that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior and firmly rooted in the biblical teaching that, "He is the vine, and we are the branches." Founders opted to place the first ICA campus in its own building - rather than to rent from a church or other religious organizations. The building was purchased by a coalition of donors and renovated by both professional contractors and a virtual army of volunteers.
ICA's mission continues to be to expand Christian education options in the greater Des Moines area by developing neighborhood schools which equip generations of men and women mighty in God's spirit, committed to Christ-like integrity, trained as disciples of Christ and educated in a Christian education system of unprecedented quality. The system will eventually include several neighborhood primary schools and a single centralized high school.
On September 7, 1999, ICA held its first day of classes - not in its current location (which was still being renovated) - but in an office building with plastic drapes hung for walls. One hundred and fifty students (ages preschool through 12th grade) and 30 staff members came together and made history in what affectionately became known as "tent city." While the contractors built walls at the Vine Street building, ICA built bonds between students, faculty members and families. God's blessing was evident.
On October 15, 1999, ICA moved into its Vine Street location. The ministry had arrived at its designated location and the vision continued to move forward.
Today, ICA is again looking for space, nearly outgrowing its current location, which has doubled in size - now meeting the needs of more than 350+ students in grades preschool through 12th. And it will move on and on, God willing - continuing to blaze new trails in Christian education.
