Description
The American Symphony Orchestra League, a national service organization, is dedicated to symphony orchestras and their music in America. Established in 1914, ASCAP is the world's largest performing rights organization, with more than 135,000 composer, lyricist and music publisher members. The Awards for Adventurous Programming, initiated by ASCAP in 1959, recognize American orchestras whose programs demonstrate a strong commitment to the works of contemporary composers. Since the establishment of the awards, ASCAP has presented more than $500,000 to orchestras of all sizes.

The Seattle Symphony, currently under the direction of Music Director Gerard Schwarz, was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest and largest cultural institutions in the Pacific Northwest. The Orchestra is recognized for its adventurous programming and tradition of performing music by contemporary composers. From September through July, the Seattle Symphony presents over 200 performances and is heard live by more than 300,000 people annually in downtown Seattle's Benaroya Hall in and at community concerts throughout Puget Sound and Washington state.
