Crusaders

Description

Crusaders was founded in 1930 by the Rev. Dr Howard Guinness. Dr Howard Guinness was a visionary man who was keen to strengthen Christian work among school students. He saw voluntary groups as a key to achieving this. From small beginnings in just four schools, Crusaders has now grown to serve 100 independent schools in New South Wales. In 2005, it is anticipated that over 5,000 students will attend Crusaders Holiday and School camps and a further 25,000 will have heard Crusader staff speak at their schools. Crusaders desires to help school students grow in their love and knowledge of Jesus Christ. We seek to equip students to be disciples of Jesus and to witness to their friends. As well as attending the CRU group at their school, we always look to encourage students to be involved in their local churches. A key emphasis is on leadership training and development. January Leadership Conference (JLC) is a popular camp for senior students who look to play a leadership role at their school. This is supplemented by a series of meetings held after school during the term to allow students to meet together to be trained in models of Biblical leadership. Junior CRU Conference is another leadership camp run in the mid-year which is designed for students who are interested in pursuing Holiday camp leadership roles. In 1990, Crusaders began an internship program designed to equip those who had left school with skills in ministry and evangelism. Called the Ian Holt Memorial Fellowship, this internship program has now trained over 60 young men and women from Campbelltown, the Northern Beaches, the Blue Mountains, the Eastern Suburbs, the Western Suburbs, the Southern Highlands, the North Shore and the Hills District! Many have gone on to other teaching and ministry posts and a large number have become Directors of CRU Holiday Camps. Crusaders owns two camp/conference centres - i) The Galston Gorge Conference & Recreation Centre and ii) The Lake Mac Outdoor Recreation Centre. These special sites offer great opportunities not only for our own camps but also for schools, churches and community groups. Crusaders is directed by a volunteer council, chaired by Mr Philip Bell who is Managing Director of Carillon Graphic Communications. Gary Hill has been the Executive Director of Crusaders since 1993. He first attended a Crusader camp in 1977 and a decade later was employed to develop educational camping programs. With previous experience as a secondary school teacher and strategy consultant, he has a passion to see young people come to know and love the Lord Jesus. In 2007, Gary was appointed Vice President of Christian Camping International Australia, a not-for-profit camping association which seeks to provide pastoral and practical support to over 230 Camps and Conference Centres and over 450 individual members.
