Description
International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes (IATSE) was founded in 1893, and is composed of the artists and craftsmen who are at the very heart of the motion picture, television and stage industries in North America, and indeed, throughout the world. In its 110 years, the IATSE has participated as a leader in the technological evolution of each of these vital industries from the birth of the cinema through sound, television, color, digital TV and HDTV.

Today, the IATSE sees digital large screen imaging as the next great improvement in the quality, flexibility, and creativity of motion pictures, and in the technical quality and distribution of concerts, stage plays, sporting events, and other cultural and educational events. Thus, the IATSE attaches great importance to the development of this new technology and is anxious to bring its own unique technical and artistic expertise to contribute to the emergence of this digital image and sound system.

To this end, the IATSE supports the regional and international studies taking place around the world on this convergence of digital technologies, especially the work of the ITU and its ITU-R Study Group 6 TG 6/9 in the field of digital large screen imagery that promises to open a new vista for large audience viewing of high quality images and sound.

The IATSE encourages studies and tests of this emerging technology from on-stage digital and film image capture through post production, mastering, distribution, and final display. This new technology will be the foundation of electronic imaging and sound for the next fifty years, well into the 21st century, and it must be founded on a sound technical and scientific base.

The IATSE applauds the concept of a tiered format structure making it possible to serve various applications yet leading to worldwide agreement on common and interchangeable standards for international program exchange. The ITU has a grave responsibility in achieving these international standards, and the IATSE pledges its support in helping to develop these worldwide standards."

The Board accepted the report.
