Description
ECR was established in 1980 to develop and market a mechanically simple and highly efficient means of harvesting renewable energy from the earth for space heating and cooling and water heating. To achieve those goals, ECR had to first develop proprietary refrigerant flow controls for the long earth coupled evaporator/condenser of its EarthLinked® heat pump. The Company produced the most energy efficient water heater ever tested at the Florida Solar Energy Center in 1984, seven successful electric utility funded demonstration projects from Florida to Michigan (where it was 25% more efficient than 20 other Geo units tested), nine U.S. and ten international patents, and the highest average rated EER and COP of any ARI heat pump product line.
ECR's EarthLinked® system is mechanically simpler, has fewer moving parts, is quieter, and is inherently 20-25% more efficient than water-based GeoExchange systems. It is uniquely attractive to electric utilities because it eliminates electric resistance heat strips for supplemental heating, thus allowing electric utilities to more effectively compete for space heating market share. Utilities experience increased sales for efficient electric heating, load management benefits of 30% summer-peak demand reduction and 79% winter-peak demand reduction. Consumers benefit from 35-65% greater energy savings.
After perfecting the technology, ECR began limited marketing in 1996, co-founded the industry organization within ARI, and obtained product safety and performance certifications in 2000. Its EarthLinked® systems are now installed in 41 states and 14 countries. The refrigerant flow controls have successfully operated the equipment of 22 manufacturers of various heat pump equipment, and raised their efficiency 10 to 15% by increasing mass flow of refrigerant and delivering refrigerant to each system component in the optimum physical state for high efficiency. They have raised the efficiency of commercial refrigeration systems by up to 21%. ECR's refrigerant controls offer the only retrofit alternative to upgrade the efficiency of commercial air conditioners and refrigeration.
