Description
MILWAUKEE, Wis., Aurora Health Care's research subject protection program has received accreditation from the Partnership for Human Research Protection, becoming one of the first health care providers in the nation to achieve this stamp of approval. "This accreditation means that our organization meets or exceeds the highest standards for protecting patients who choose to participate in clinical research," said Nick Turkal, M.D., senior clinical vice president of Aurora. "I am proud of Aurora's Research Subject Protection Program and the many Aurora physicians and other caregivers who conduct research. They are putting patient safety first while advancing medical knowledge." The Partnership for Human Research Protection is a collaborative effort of the nation's leading advocates for quality in health care, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The accreditation program seeks to protect the safety and rights of participants in clinical trials and research programs in public and private hospitals, academic medical centers, and other research facilities in the United States and abroad. The program provides a national set of standards and a voluntary oversight process that creates a credible, objective framework for ensuring that processes are in place to inform and protect the thousands of volunteer human subjects who participate in clinical trials and other research activities every year. To earn accreditation, Aurora completed a thorough on-line review against standards established by the Partnership for Human Research Protection, as well as an on-site accreditation survey. During the on-site review, a team of research clinicians and others experienced in biomedical research validated Aurora's performance against the national standards. "We commend Aurora Health Care for becoming one of the first health care providers to earn accreditation and for its commitment to protecting the safety and rights of research participants," said Esther Emard, chief executive officer of the Partnership for Human Research Protection. "We look forward to seeing other organizations follow Aurora's lead." About 480 clinical research projects are now under way within the Aurora system. Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 80 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
